I think Raihan, boring ass gym challenge aside, was actually a step in the right direction.

Pokemon is actually a fairly mechanically dense JRPG but the games don't take any real advantage of that fact outside of post-game content. Give me rain teams, double battles, baton pass strats, etc. The games absolutely do need a difficulty rebalance but I think that needs to come via major trainers having competent battle strategies and not just throwing 3-4 random water types at you with no team synergy with a 10 level advantage on the player. It's not like Gen 6 where you could easily be 10 levels over the champion without even trying.ĮDIT 2: For what it's worth, exp curves should never be the lynch pin that holds the game's difficulty curve together. In Gen 7/8 the exp system actively reduced exp earned when you're overlevelled. If you do scrape content, dynamax raids aside, you're going to be like 5 levels over at most in late game. The overlevelling aspect of modern Pokemon games is largely overstated. Feeling a little over-levelled? Maybe sub in that Pidgeotto you just caught and use those optional battles you skipped last route to bring it up to par. My point was that you that many trainer battles are optional and you don't have to clear out literally everything as soon as you walk into a route with the same 6 Pokemon you've had for 90% of the game. I didn't say that you should mainline the critical path and never deviate. Frankly if there was an option I wish they dumped it's "switch mode" but I accept I'm definitely in the minority on that. I don't personally think it's that necessary as the game should be balanced around it being on but options are options and people like options. I never said that toggling the EXP Share is a bad option to have. I think the only reason we don't expect that to be the case with Pokemon is that it didn't use to be the case.ĮDIT: People seem to be largely missing or misrepresenting my point so I'll take the L and assume it's my wording of my argument that's at fault.

Step 1: you can start by downloading a reliable and bug free emulator. The second component is the Pokémon Sun and Moon rom itself to play on the emulator. The first component is the emulation program which can imitate the 3ds OS and software. I mean, in any other JRPG party exp gain is a standard function and you would expect to be overlevelled if you cleared every bit of content before progressing the story. There are two components for playing a 3ds Pokémon Sun and Moon rom on your PC. Maybe you will all disagree with this but I think it's worth bringing up. I can guarantee you right now, if you go into every area with the goal of clearing every bit of content before completing the gym then you're going to be overlevelled. I think it'll be interesting to see how people feel about the level of challenge in Scarlet/Violet given the open ended nature of it. The additional trainers are there as a means to gain exp if you need it but we treat them as content to "clear". But I do think part of the issue is players sticking to the approach they're familiar with despite being given more flexibility. I'm not saying that the exp curve is perfect in every 3D era game. If you see a trainer looking in multiple directions you can afford to try ducking them rather than just battling them anyway. Optional trainer battles were a thing but you were taking a major EXP deficit by skipping them.įrom XY onwards I feel that a lot of us have retained this mindset (I know I tend to habitually scrape through every encounter on a given route) but exp isn't a rare commodity now. We were taught, mechanically, to scrape the world and fight everybody. If you didn't fight every trainer and grind you would likely to be underlevelled for major battles (with the notable exception of Johto's weird level curve). Stay tuned.Prior to the introduction of the current EXP Share mechanics in Gen VI, EXP was far more difficult to obtain. Pokémon Go for Apple Watch is coming soon.
